Basketball roundup: Brumm stars in another sport

Marcus Brumm came up big for Lakeville South's football team in the fall. Now he is doing likewise for the boys' basketball team.

Brumm sank a free throw with seven-tenths of a second remaining, giving Class 4A, No. 2 Lakeville South a 65-64 victory over Armstrong in a nonconference game Thursday at Lakeville. The unbeaten Cougars won their fourth in a row, while the loss was Armstrong's first .

The 6-4 senior forward also scored his 1,000th career point. Teammate Greg Turbes had a double-double (18 points and 10 assists).

Senior guard Ben Vathing had 25 points for Armstrong (4-1).

In another boys' basketball game:

• Hill-Murray overcame a 32-point performance from Zach Towle to beat Concordia (Roseville) 71-66. Peter McKeown led the Pioneers with 20 points.

Girls' basketball

• Hopkins broke a two-game losing streak in a big way. The Royals scored 56 first-half points while opening up a 43-point lead en route to a 91-29 triumph over Henry Sibley. Junior Stephanie Sension had 17 points. Twelve different Royals scored.

• Laura Kalbfell had 12 points as Lakeville South overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Class 3A, No. 5 DeLaSalle 49-46. Lakeville South outscored the Islanders 28-17 in the second half.

• Eden Prairie scored a goal late in each period, shutting out Grand Rapids 3-0 in the second round of the Edina Invitational. Junior forward Brad Knudsen opened the scoring with four minutes, 31 seconds remaining in the first period. Senior Brian Brooke stopped all 22 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.

• Junior forward Cory Thorson's second power-play goal 2:10 into overtime gave Armstrong a 4-3 victory over St. Louis Park. The Falcons scored two third-period goals to tie it.

Girls' hockey

• April Weller scored five minutes, 18 seconds into the third period, giving Woodbury a 3-2 victory over the Minneapolis Novas.

• Margaret Chute scored all three goals as Blake shut out Minnetonka 3-0.

Postponements galore

The icy, snowy weather conditions wreaked havoc on high school sporting events around the metro area Thursday for the first time this winter. It even hampered television coverage.

The two games in the Edina Invitational boys' hockey tournament were scheduled to be televised on FSN, but the second game between the Hornets and Elk River at 8 p.m. was postponed. Elk River postponed all of its sporting events.

"I feel bad for the kids because they had a chance to play on TV," Elk River coach Tony Sarsland said. "It was a tough decision, but out here it was pretty bad. If you're going to error, it's going to be on the side of caution."

Like Elk River, the St. Paul City and almost all of the Minneapolis conference schools postponed their events. Numerous other schools around the metro area also postponed their extra-curricular activities.
